Theremin
The Theremin is one of the most unique instruments in electronic music, invented by Russian physicist Léon Theremin in 1920. What makes the Theremin so distinctive is that it’s played without any physical contact. The musician controls the pitch and volume by moving their hands near two antennas, creating its signature eerie, otherworldly sound, often used in science fiction films and experimental music.
Jean-Michel Jarre, known for his mastery of electronic instruments, has featured the Theremin in his music and live performances, adding an atmospheric, haunting tone to his sound. Its ability to produce smooth, continuous notes makes it perfect for the ambient soundscapes that characterize much of Jarre’s work.
